An earthquake that struck the Georgian city of Oni last night has damaged homes. The Governor of the Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti regions, David Gagoshidze, told journalists that the quake seriously damaged quite a lot of homes, where it is now impossible to live.
At present, members of the administration are visiting all the houses and find out how serious the situation is. "The damage is quite serious, and a special commission will establish the degree of damage," noted Gagoshidze.
He added that the rescue services are already working there. In Ambrolauri, a woman who jumped from the second floor during the earthquake was injured. She has fractured her femur and was taken to the Gudushauri clinic.
The earthquake caused a rockfall on the road, which has held up traffic. At present special group of road builders are clearing the road.
The earthquake, which occurred during the night, did not cause destruction in Tbilisi, the Chief of the City Emergency Service, Temur Giorgadze said, adding that all the capital's regions are in a normal condition.
According to the seismological center, the earthquake that struck Georgia at 02.45 last night measured 8 in magnitude. The earthquake's epicenter was 10-15 km south-east of the Oni region, and the tremors were felt throughout the country
