UN Secretary General to visit Turkmenistan

UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon plans in November to pay an official visit to Turkmenistan, in whose capital the regional office of the UN Preventive Diplomacy is located.

The government press office reported that preparing for the forthcoming visit was discussed at the meeting with the Turkmen President, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov on the UN Special Envoy, said Miroslav Yench, Head of the Ashgabat UN Center for Preventive Diplomacy in Central Asia (UNRCCA).

Berdimuhamedov has recently participated in a regular session of the UN General Assembly in New York and proposed to hold the high-level international conference in Ashgabat under the aegis of the UN devoted to the issue of disarmament in Central Asia and Caspian Basin.

Miroslav Yench noted that "Turkmenistan's constructive position, demonstrating the willingness to maintain open and mutually beneficial cooperation with all interested partners, a solid platform for further effective cooperation in the framework of the joint projects and programs."

A senior UN official stressed that the UN is interested in further building a constructive partnership with Turkmenistan in the interest of regional and global security.

At the meeting, the sides noted that "sustainable development in Central Asia calls for speedy solution to existing problems, hindering the integration processes and the pace of socio-economic development of the states located here. It is about sustainable water use, energy, the impact of other factors on regional stability.
