Azerbaijan, Baku, Sept. 29 / Trend J.Babayeva /

The activities of the Parliamentary Assembly of Turkish-speaking countries (TurkPA) will create opportunities for productive political dialogue between the countries, Azerbaijani Parliamentary Speaker Ogtay Asadov, said at a plenary meeting of the TurkPA.

"The TurkPA will achieve prosperity in the region. The region's major economic projects serve the development of nations," Asadov said.

On Sept. 28, Baku hosts the plenary session of the Parliamentary Assembly of Turkish-speaking countries with the participation of parliamentary delegations of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkey.

According to Asadov, the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict prevents the establishment of stability in the region.

Unresolved Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, not only delaying the development of Azerbaijan, but also threatens the stability and security in the region and the world. Azerbaijan is trying to resolve the conflict under international law and principles, and within the territorial integrity, Asadov added.

All peoples living here are interested in establishing peace and stability in the region, Asadov said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations.
