During the Kurban Bayram period, the Turkmen government will organize local Muslims' pilgrimage to local shrines.

Today the plan has been approved in the country on Nov. 11-29 in 2009. Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov instructed the Council on Religious Affairs under President of Turkmenistan to execute this order.

This organization together with regional authorities will compile a list of those willing to make a pilgrimage and organize it in accordance with the approved plan.
Turkmens are the adherents of the Sunni branch of Islam. In previous years, hundreds of Turkmens left for Mecca (Saudi Arabia) to perform hajj through the governmental support.

The national shrines include unique historical and cultural monuments, the Kunya-Urgench (ancient capital of Khorezm) city occupies a special and it has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
