Newly elected Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland met with the Permanent Representatives of GUAM member countries to the Council of Europe, the Azerbaijani Permanent Mission to the CE told Trend on Nov. 11.

This meeting has been initiated at one of the traditional meetings of the Permanent Representatives of GUAM member countries to the CE, held recently.

The meeting discussed the challenges of the organization during the new secretary general's office term, the reforms to be undertaken in order to enhance the political role and authority of the Council of Europe in the international community, as well as conflicts existing in the territories of GUAM member countries and issues related to enforcing the 14th Protocol providing improvement of the European Court of Human Rights.

According to Jagland, there is some progress in Russia due to ratification of the protocol.

He stressed the importance of continuing work in this direction. In addition, the secretary general said that the Secretariat of the Council of Europe will undergo major structural changes.

The Permanent Representatives of GUAM member countries signaled their willingness to support tasks and reforms to be held in the organization.

At the meeting, the Azerbaijani side stressed that the Council of Europe should play a more active role in resolving the frozen conflicts existing in the GUAM territory.

"This meeting was useful in terms of close familiarization of the CE Secretary General with processes taking place in the region and Azerbaijan," said the report.
