Georgia, Tbilisi, Jan. 15 / Trend N. Kirtskhalia /
Georgia's Deputy Parliamentary Speaker Mikhail Machavariani expressed regret that opposition party representatives in the Central Election Commission (CEC) failed to elect a chairman yesterday.
Machavariani said it is the first time in the post-Soviet sphere when there was a balance of the majority while electing a CEC chairman, including the opposition and non-governmental sector.
He stressed that this model was proposed by the opposition.
Although parliament has seven days to make a decision on the issue, there is no reason to delay the process, he said. The CEC chairman will be approved at a special meeting today, Machavariani added.
The Georgian president proposed three candidates for CEC chairman - Otar Sichinava, Levan Tarkhnishvili and Zurab Kharatishvili.
The parliamentary opposition does not intend to participate in the elections for CEC chairman.
