Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov will take part in an international conference on providing assistance to Afghanistan in London Jan. 28, Foreign Ministry spokesman Elkhan Polukhov told Trend .

The conference will aim to solve the question facing the international community about how to help Afghanistan stabilize the situation in the country and create a functioning state. The U.N. is the coordinator of efforts in this direction.

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon will be a co-chair of the conference.

The other two co-chairs of the forum will be Afghan President Hamid Karzai and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

About 90 Azerbaijani peacekeepers serve in the structure of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan. They carry out patrols in Kabul.

In 1997, the country established a company of peacekeepers and later a peacekeeping battalion under the National Army of Azerbaijan. The peacekeepers served in Iraq and Kosovo under multinational forces.
