A bill on the status of Azerbaijan's ex-presidents may be tabled at the Azerbaijani parliament's spring session, Deputy Executive Secretary of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party (NAP), MP Siyavush Novruzov told journalists today. "If this happens, the ruling party will present its approach and suggestions on this matter," he added.
Amendments and supplements to the Constitution were made via a referendum March 18. The amendments stipulated assigning an ex-president status to former heads of state. A new bill must be prepared and submitted to parliament in this regard.
Opposition Great Establishment party head, MP Fazil Mustafa earlier prepared and submitted a bill on the status of ex-presidents.
The NAP suggests taking into account international experience when f developing the bill, he added.
"Based on the international practice, the status of the former president granted to persons who have completed their authority, or to persons, terminating the post for objective reasons. This status can also be granted to persons who resigned in connection with the socio-political situation. We oppose the provision of the ex-president status to those who have committed a crime, and have not completed their authority because of political failure," he said.
