Turkmen President Gurbangulu Berdimuhammedov signed a decree pardoning prisoners in honor of Victory Day May 9.
He instructed the National Security Ministry to ensure tight control over the order's execution, so that "all of the pardoned individuals can return home in time to meet this great holiday in a circle of friends and relatives."
Regional and local governments were told to take measures to employ the former prisoners.
Amnesty is traditionally held in Turkmenistan on the eve of Flag Day, Independence Day, and Neutrality Day.
