Prior to National leader Heydar Aliyev's returning to the power, Azerbaijan was known as the regressing country in the world, while today, it is known as a country with rapidly developing economy, Ruling New Azerbaijan Party (NAP) Deputy Chairman and Executive Secretary Ali Ahmedov said at the "Gurtulush-17"  conference.

"Heydar Aliyev's returning to the power has changed the life of Azerbaijan. After his return to the power, Azerbaijan has passed a way from setbacks and failure to success thanks to Aliyev's policy," Ahmedov said.

The country observes progress in all spheres of life by the 17th anniversary of Heydar Aliyev's returning to the power, he said.

"Azerbaijan was able to declare about itself as a modern resurrecting state, the foundation of which was laid by Aliyev 17 years ago. Aliyev's returning to the power, which is marked as the national salvation, became the most significant event in the modern history of Azerbaijan. Every Azerbaijani citizen respects and honors Aliyev's memory," Ahmedov said.

He said Azerbaijan has achieved tremendous success for 17 years and the people gained optimism and faith in the future.

Parliamentary Committee Chairman MP Arif Rahimzade informed the participants of the conference about the socio-economic and political situation in Azerbaijan before Aliyev's returning to the power. Then chaos and lawlessness reigned in the country, he said.

"Azerbaijan faced the threat of destruction and collapse. Heydar Aliyev's return was the demand of the people," Rahimzade said. Rahimzade also informed the conference about reforms undertaken by the national leader.

NAP Political Council's member MP Eldar Ibrahimov spoke about the tense situation in Azerbaijan in the early 90-ies. Heydar Aliyev laid the basis for Azerbaijan's National Salvation in Nakhchivan, Ibrahimov said. Aliyev saved Nakhchivan from the Armenian occupation, he added.

A phased development began in all fields after Heydar Aliyev's return, Education Minister Misir Mardanov told journalists.

Mardanov said political and economic stability has been established in the country after Aliyev's returning to the power and Azerbaijan has embarked on a path of development. "Accomplishments that we have achieved so far are associated with Aliyev's returning to the power. All of us must honor this day -the National Salvation Day - for the progress achieved in the country. The day was declared as a holiday in Azerbaijan not in vain," Mardanov said.
