"The dynamic pace of development in the 21st century, as well as a globalization rapidly penetrating into our lives, sets even more important and urgent tasks before the media," Uzbek President Islam Karimov's congratulation message to the mass media representatives on the occasion of their professional holiday celebrated June 27 says.
The congratulation message was published in the official media on Saturday.
Karimov said this is liability of journalist, his professionalism striving to keep pace with the times and boldly raise the most pressing problems, bringing it to the attention of the general public, the ability to devote himself to his people for the sake of its future and consolidation of the principles of rights and freedoms, justice and truth in our lives.
Karimov also considers it important "that every journalist recognizing himself as a patriot of his country contributed to strengthening of the independence of the state and increasing its credibility on the world stage."
All of this requires the media representatives to deeply understand the essence of processes in today's world, continue learning, develop and widely use the advanced information and communication technology, potential of the Internet, the message says.
"All we understand the upcoming large-scale work to further strengthen the legal guarantees of media and create the necessary conditions to improve the training of creative and technical staff who are worthy to promote their work, as a result of which this area will be turned into a qualitatively new level and become an integral part of the democratic state building," Karimov said.
Uzbekistan has been celebrating the Day of the Press and Media since 1994.
The winners of the republican contest "Best Journalist of the Year", which is traditionally held by the Uzbek Journalists Creative Union, were awarded on the eve of the holiday.
Approximately 1,200 media outlets, including more than 900 publications, 80 television and radio channels, 4 information agencies and more than 120 online publications, working in nine languages, operate in Uzbekistan.
