Azerbaijani opposition is not able to assess the needs of society. Opposition parties are stuck in their activity in 1980s of last century, general secretary of the Azerbaijani National Independence Party Fuad Mukhtarov said at the Tenth Congress of the party held today.

"They are stuck in the 1980s. Their activity is to hold pickets and rallies. The opposition should take serious steps, or disappear," Mukhtarov said.

Azerbaijani National Independence Party was established in 1992. Since 1995, the party has been cooperating with the International Democratic Union. It united 82 center-right parties from 36 countries. Former chairman of the party Etibar Mammadov twice fought for the presidency. After the defeat in the presidential elections of 2003, Mammadov resigned. The party is headed by Ayaz Rustamov today. A new chairman of the organization will be elected at the Tenth Congress of the party.

Azerbaijani National Independence Party representative said that the Azerbaijani opposition needs an ideology.

"The split of the opposition serves the interests of the government. Nobody made such a blow to the opposition it made itself. The opposition has lost its credibility because of the constant internal disputes. Educated and clever young people today do not enter the ranks of the opposition parties", Mukhtarov said.

One can not blame the government in the permanent defeat of the opposition, secretary-general said.

"The opposition has not conducted extensive joint discussions. It has not reviewed the reasons for its own failures. The discussions were so superficial, that the blame for the defeat was laid on the government," Mukhtarov said.
