Tajikistan to be next chairman of CIS (UPDATE)

The chairmanship to the CIS for the next year will shift to Tajikistan, said Russian President Dmitry Medvedev at an expanded meeting of CIS Heads of State on Friday, RIA Novosti reported.

He also said that Moscow would host an informal summit of CIS countries at the end of next year, RIA Novosti reported.

Current Chairman of the CIS is Russia. Chairman changes once per year. The decision on shifting CIS chairmanship to Tajikistan was taken at an expanded meeting of CIS Heads of State on Friday. The next scheduled summit of CIS countries will be held in Dushanbe in September next year.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev also attended the meeting.

CIS was founded Dec. 8, 1991 after signing an Agreement on Establishing the Commonwealth of Independent States in Viskuly (Bialowieza Forest) near Brest (Belarus). Currently the CIS includes countries such as Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.
