Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili awarded U.S. Senator Joe Lieberman the Order of Saint Giorgi, the Georgian Presidential Administration told Trend.

Saakashvili presented the award to senator during his visit to the United States.

The president is in Washington taking part in a ceremony commemorating U.S. diplomat Richard Holbrooke. He is also holding meetings in Congress.

Yesterday evening, the president met with Lieberman and awarded him for his services to the Georgian people. He noted the special role of the congressman in assisting in the democratic development in Georgia. 

The Georgian leader also met with senators David Dreyer and Bill Shuster. The meeting was held behind closed doors. The parties discussed intensifying Georgian-U.S. relations.
