Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, Jan.21 / Trend H. Hasanov /

Turkmenistan's parliament should be active in implementing the country's initiatives voiced from the tribune of the U.N. General Assembly's sixty-fifth session, which are directed at ensuring security in Central Asia and the Caspian Sea, the country's media quoted President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov as saying today.

"A permanent character in the form of creation of an appropriate structure should be given to political cooperation of the countries which are located here," national TV channel Miras cited the president as saying.

Turkmenistan has made a number of initiatives to create in Ashgabat a regional center of the U.N. Environment Program (UNEP) for Central Asia and Caspian Basin, as well as the regional office of the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The U.N. Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia operates in Ashgabat.

In the context, the President noted the importance of continuing cooperation in this field established between parliament and the U.N. specialized agencies, particularly with the UNDP.

According to the President, it is advisable to use the opportunities of interparliamentary ties in bringing information about the various directions of foreign policy activity and international initiatives of Turkmenistan to the world's attention.

Given Turkmenistan's active role in international relations, the revision of a number of laws is considered to be an urgent issue.
