The problems with drying up of the Aral Sea affect all the countries of Central Asia, which are in close proximity to the sea, the chairman of the executive committee of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS), Sagit Ibatullin, said in an interview with "Neutral Turkmenistan" newspaper.
"Today, scholars are united by joint resolving the issues related to the Aral Sea," he said.
The IFAS head is involved in the International Scientific Conference on "Achievements in science and advanced technologies for restoring saline lands and improving the operation of irrigation facilities".
The event was organized by the Ministry of Water Resources and the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan.
IFAS was founded on April 9, 1999.
The Memorandum of Understanding was signed in Ashgabat a year ago between the UN and the Executive Committee of IFAS in the office of the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy in Central Asia.
The purpose of the document is to develop cooperation aimed at strengthening regional cooperation, improving the ecological and socio-economic situation in the Aral Sea basin.
