The President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has invited the President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari to pay a visit to Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan's new ambassador to Pakistan Dashgin Shikarov handed over the Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's invitation to the Pakistani President Zardari during presenting his credentials, the embassy told Trend today.

Asking to convey thanks to the President of Azerbaijan for the invitation, the head of Pakistan welcomed the invitation to visit the fraternal country.

At the meeting, President Zardari said that Pakistan is interested in the development of fraternal relations based on common historical, cultural and religious foundations. The President also said that Pakistan was one of the first countries recognizing Azerbaijan's independence and has always supported Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh issue and the liberation of occupied Azerbaijani lands. Saying that Pakistan will not forget Azerbaijan's support provided during the floods in Pakistan last year, the President expressed special gratitude for this to the people of Azerbaijan, particularly the Head of State Ilham Aliyev.

Noting that official Islamabad intends to continue to develop economic ties between the two countries, Pakistan's President said that he would make efforts to realize direct flights Islamabad-Baku or Karachi-Baku. Mentioning the importance of construction of a school by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation in Kashmir, Pakistan's President expressed his gratitude to the President of the Foundation Mehriban Aliyeva.

The Head of State added that he appreciated the continued support of Azerbaijan in the Kashmir issue and its solution in the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) on the basis of UN Security Council resolutions.

Shikarov said that the political relations between the two fraternal countries are at a high level, Pakistan is one of the important and key partners of Azerbaijan.

During the meeting, the Ambassador informed the President of the constructive work being done in Azerbaijan, and of the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The Ambassador informed the President of Pakistan that the Azerbaijani government intends to expand cooperation between Azerbaijan and Pakistan, particularly in the commercial, industrial and defense sectors.

Stressing that the friendly ties between the two countries developed successfully within the international and regional organizations in the line of strategic partnership since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Pakistan, Shikarov stressed that the government and people of Pakistan have always supported Azerbaijan's position in resolving the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and unambiguously supported Azerbaijan's position to resolve it.
