IAEA delegation is on visit to Turkmenistan

A delegation of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) led by Nobuhiro Muroya, Director of the Operations Division of the Safeguards Department is on visit to Ashgabat, the Turkmen government said on Thursday.

A delegation of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) led by Nobuhiro Muroya, Director of the Operations Division of the Safeguards Department is on visit to Ashgabat, the Turkmen government said on Thursday.

During the visit the delegation held a number of meetings at the ministries and departments, including the Ministry of Oil and Gas Reserves and Mineral Resources, the Academy of Sciences and the Foreign Ministry.

"Views were exchanged on prospects of partnership," the Turkmen government said.
According to the Turkmen government, "the meeting participants expressed the profound willingness to further intensify fruitful cooperation between Turkmenistan and the international structures of the United Nations to achieve the Millennium Development Goals".

Turkmenistan has been cooperating with the IAEA since 2005, when it signed the Agreement on the Application of Safeguards in Connection with the Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

According to the document, Turkmenistan has undertaken to regularly once a year provide international experts with data on accounting of nuclear and ionizing materials subject to safeguards, as well as high-precision equipment, where nuclear and ionizing sources are used.

The "Sun" Scientific Production Association at the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan was charged with monitoring and preparation of reporting documentation, holding joint workshops and trainings for staff of ministries and departments.
