Iran's Foreign Ministry expressed respect toward election result in South Sudan, however issued statement did not mentioned, whether Iran recognizes South Sudan's independency or not, IRNA reported quoting Foreign Ministry statement on Saturday.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran have closely observed recent events in South Sudan in recent years and hopes, that the new developments leads to stability and peace and prepare grounds for constructive cooperation in the region," the statement indicated.

However the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad previously accused the West on dividing Sudan "we condemn the conspiracies of imperialist regime against Sudan nation and believe they can preserve their unity and overcome all obstacles".

Ahmadinejad called Sudan as an independent country which can decide over its interests.
South Sudan announced independency as a new country after five decades and two civil wars by election in January.
