The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has today granted "Partner for Democracy" status to the Palestinian National Council (PNC).

The decision was taken following the discussions over a report prepared by PACE Political Affairs Committee's rapporteur Tiny Kox during the second working day of the organization's autumn session.

The report, reflecting the overall political and institutional situation in the Palestinian territories, says that the "Partner for Democracy" status provided to PNC corresponds to the PACE Charter both in both form and content.

In addition, the report highlighted the importance of Palestine's continuing reforms to strengthen legal state and respect for human rights and the organization of democratic institutions.

The report also called upon to elect a delegation to be chosen democratically from the ranks of the PNC, as well as proposed to consider the progress to be achieved in implementing political commitments undertaken by the National Council for two years before the Assembly, and in implementing policy and institutional reforms.
