Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb. 17 / Trend /

Azerbaijan's participation at the G20 is undoubtedly the result of the country's success in the international arena, Fikret Sadikhov, political scientist and professor of the Western University believes. Azerbaijan has become one of 10 countries invited to the G20.

"Participation of Azerbaijan at the G 20 is undoubtedly the result of the country's success in the international arena which it earned over past years. The role of Azerbaijan both at global and regional levels with foreign policy implemented for the past few years which was quite restrained and balanced; and its priorities which the country is building in its relations with leading state, and with countries of the region have all been noticed," Mr Sadikhov told Trend on Friday.

Azerbaijan will be represented at the G20 summit of foreign ministers for the first time. It will be held in the Mexican city of Los-Kabos on Feb 18-20. Mexico holds this year's presidency.

The political scientist believes an invitation to such an authoritative forum is recognition of the important role the country plays in ensuring the energy security of Europe's leading countries.

He said Azerbaijan in fact has turned into an important regional player, upon which security and stability of European countries themselves can depend and this is a very important factor.

"I think this is a realistic assessment of both the capabilities of Azerbaijan and the course it will pursue in the future and the principles on the basis of which the entire political activities and the priorities it assigns are of primary importance to relations with the leading states.

All this makes our country even more significant in the eyes of the world and adds it weight in turbulent world politics, "he said.
In addition to the G20 member countries, 10 countries and one organisation namely the African Union, Algeria, Austria, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Chile, Colombia, Norway, Singapore, Spain and the UAE, are invited to the meeting.
