Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has addressed the Nuclear Security Summit, which is continuing in Seoul, Republic of Korea, AzerTAc state agency reported.

The second day of the Summit focused on national measures in the field of nuclear security and the strengthening of physical security at nuclear facilities. World leaders discussed international cooperative measures to protect nuclear materials and facilities from terrorist groups.

Speakers at the event stressed that nuclear terrorism continued to remain a global threat, adding, however, the world countries were moving in the right direction.

In his speech, President Aliyev said nuclear terrorism was a priority issue for all world countries, including Azerbaijan.

The President said Azerbaijan respected international resolutions on nuclear security. President Aliyev said Azerbaijan was fulfilling those resolutions, adding his country supported and would always support the international community`s efforts on this front.

On the issue of nuclear security in the region, President Aliyev said Armenia`s Nuclear Power Station, which was built in 1976, was already outdated. "It does not meet modern standards and is located in a seismic zone."

The Azerbaijani leader stressed the importance of the Summit, expressing confidence it would be a success in terms of conducting discussions on nuclear security challenges.

The speakers said the fact the Summit brought together heads of state and government from more than 50 countries gave hopes that more real steps would be taken on this front.

The Seoul Summit broadened the scope of discussions on nuclear security by comprehensively addressing issues both dealt with at the Washington Summit - including the protection of nuclear materials and facilities and countering nuclear smuggling, as well as new issues such as the nexus between nuclear safety and security and the protection of radioactive sources.

The event was followed by Leaders Working Lunch, which was attended by the Azerbaijani President.

The Summit`s second Plenary Session saw the adoption of the final Seoul Communiqué. Leaders agreed to hold the next Nuclear Security Summit in the Netherlands in 2014.

Then, President of the Republic of Korea Lee Myung-bak and his spouse Kim Yoon-ok hosted a lunch in honor of heads of delegations and their spouses.

President Ilham Aliyev attended the event.
