The German Embassy in Azerbaijan's reaction to a recent article in the Yeni (New) Azerbaijan newspaper in connection with anti-Azerbaijani campaign pursued by certain circles in Germany is surprising, the Azerbaijani Embassy to Germany said on Monday.

First, in Azerbaijan, as in Germany, the press is free, and the government of Azerbaijan does not have the power to influence the print media. On the other hand, in Germany for a long time, that is, after the victory of Azerbaijan in Eurovision Song Contest, some circles suddenly began a systematic anti-Azerbaijani campaign. Depressing is the fact that Commissioner for Human Rights of Germany Markus Loening, the representative of Germany in the Council of Europe Christopher Strasser, as well as some members of the Bundestag, have actively participated in this campaign," the statement said.

The campaign is supported by a number of print media in Germany, including such as Spigel and ARD.

The essence of information distributed during the campaign makes it clear that certain circles in Germany intend to damage the image of Azerbaijan, the diplomatic mission noted.

"However, we consider that such a campaign of slander and lies can not change the position of the German people in respect of Azerbaijan, and the participants of this campaign will not achieve their goal to harm the close friendly relations between Azerbaijan and Germany, formed over many years," the statement said.
