Azerbaijan, Baku, 20 May / Trend, I. Izzet /

There is uncertainty as to who will come to power in Syria after Bashar al-Assad and who in the oposition will be preferred by the West, Director of the Eurasian Development Research Center of Turkey and former diplomat Alev Kilic told Trend.

According to him, events taking place in Syria, with which Turkey has the longest land border, are very interesting to Ankara, but at the same time distressing. Stability and prosperity should be established in Syria as quickly as possible. However, it is impossible to achieve such a cessation of conflict with the current regime still in power. It is necessary to immediately put an end to the bloody confrontation. It is time for a new political establishment in Syria.

"There is uncertainty as to who will come to power in Syria after Bashar al-Assad, who in the oposition will be preferred by the West and what exactly will follow a transition. It is too early to talk about that," the diplomat said.

According to Kilic, despite there are various factions amongst the rebels, including groups from other states, the overall goal is to create a democratic field, where everyone will be equally represented.

"The fact that Assad's government is being opposed by hired militants and terrorist groups from different countries is true. However, it does not affect the crisis. The present struggle is a struggle for democracy. But there may be those, who want to take advantage of it for other purposes, and this should not be surprising," Kilic said.
