CIS mission head meets Chairman of CEC

Head of the CIS observation mission for the presidential election in Azerbaijan Sergey Lebedev has today met with Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Mazahir Panahov, the Central Election Commission said on Monday.

Head of the CIS observation mission for the presidential election in Azerbaijan Sergey Lebedev has today met with Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Mazahir Panahov, the Central Election Commission said on Monday.

According to the report, during the meeting the CEC head stressed the importance of the institution of observers from the point of view of transparency of the election and expressed his satisfaction with the mission members' visit to Azerbaijan.

The CIS mission has been in Azerbaijan since September 10 to monitor the pre-election situation. Observers visited Baku and regions of the country, held several meetings and examined the pre-election situation, Lebedev said.

Around 300 members of the CIS mission will visit the regions of Azerbaijan, examine the pre-election situation and observe the voting, he stressed.

He also stressed the high level of preparation for elections in Azerbaijan.

According to Lebedev, equal rights were created for the election campaign for 10 presidential candidates.

"I am confident that the election in Azerbaijan will be held at a high level," the head of the mission added.

The presidential election in Azerbaijan will be held on October 9. The previous presidential election was held on October 15, 2008. The presidential election in Azerbaijan is held every five years.
