White House: U.S. to continue supporting Turkey

Baku, Azerbaijan, Jan. 30

By Rufiz Hafizoglu - Trend:

The U.S. will continue supporting Turkey, U.S. Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes said, Turkish Haber 7 TV Channel reported on Jan.30.

Turkey and the U.S. are allies, and they established close cooperation in many areas, Rhodes said.

Commenting on the news in the media that President Obama allegedly did not answer phone calls from Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Rhodes said that Obama and Erdogan conduct phone conversations.

"Turkey is a democratic country and a NATO member. The U.S. does not and will not interfere in the internal affairs of Turkey," Rhodes stressed.

U.S. Department of State said previously that the United States is not and will not become involved in Turkey's domestic politics.

The statement was made after U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Francis Ricciardone met with Republican People's Party leader Kemal Kılıcdaroglu after the start of a corruption scandal in Turkey.
