Baku, Azerbaijan, April 28
By Rufiz Hafizoglu - Trend:
The Turkish leading opposition People's Republican Party will participate in May Day marches to be held on Taksim Square, the Turkish channel Haber7 said on April 28.
The member from the opposition Republican People's Party Safak Pavey made this statement, according to the TV channel.
"The May Day marches on Taksim Square in Istanbul are of particular importance for the opposition," he said.
Pavey believes that Taksim Square is a symbol of resistance to the government.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said earlier that Taksim Square is not suitable for holding the May Day march.
"One should forget about holding marches on Taksim Square," the prime minister said.
Erdogan went on to add that Turkey's government is not interested in aggravating the situation in the country during the May Day march.
"The May Day march will not take place on Taksim Square in Istanbul," Turkish Interior Minister Efkan Ala said.
