The development of relations with neighboring countries is the basis of Iran's foreign policy, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani told reporters on Nov.12, IRIB News official news website of Iranian television reported.
He made the remarks at Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport before his visit to Baku, Azerbaijan.
Rouhani said the relations with Azerbaijan are very important for Iran, adding that the two countries are bound by a common culture, civilization and religion.
"Azerbaijan and Iran have great potential to develop their relations and the improvement of ties would benefit both of the countries," the president said. "We will strive to make the changes in the spheres of energy, legal status of the Caspian Sea, ecology, fishery, common borders, tourism and trade to meet the interests of the two countries' peoples."
Rouhani added that both countries have great potential for cooperation in connection with the ongoing processes in the region.
"Caucasus is a bridge for Iran lying to the north and east and Iran can also be a bridge for Caucasus," the head of state said.
Rouhani added that regional problems, including such issues as fighting against terrorism, as well as oil prices will be discussed during his visit.
Hassan Rouhani started a two-day visit to Azerbaijan on Nov.12.
