Embrace of the US and Nagorno-Karabakh separatists: is it a democracy?

Baku, Azerbaijan, Dec. 3

By Elchin Mehdiyev - Trend:

Today we heard the news, which is completely contrary to US policy aimed at peace, democracy, stability and security throughout the world.

"The parliament speaker" of the so-called Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, Ashot Gulian is making an "official" visit to the US. During his visit, Gulian had a number of meetings in the US Congress. This information was disseminated by the "press service" of the separatist regime in Nagorno-Karabakh.

The consent of the US to a visit of any representative of the so-called Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, which it even itself doesn't recognize, and, aside from that, the creation of conditions for holding meetings with individual congressmen in the country's supreme body, the Congress, raise serious doubts about the sincerity of the US and the essence of the policy pursued by it in the interests of peace and stability in the world.

Azerbaijan, as a country, which has long been suffering from the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, and which has supported international anti-terrorist operations of the US and took part in them, itself being in a state of war, has every right to express strong dissatisfaction over this and even warn the US.

The US, recognizing Azerbaijan's territorial integrity, created conditions for holding such meetings for a representative of the separatist regime, which occupied Azerbaijan's lands - something that can be explained neither by logic nor by any law or regulation.

How one can assess such step taken by the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairing country that is engaged in the settlement of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and always urges the sides to achieve peace?

Why the country which always talks about the peace and stability opens the doors to the representatives of the separatist regime, the regime which it does not recognize?

Such actions of the US harm the negotiations on the settlement of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict through peaceful means and cast doubt on the fair position of the US on this issue.

It is worth to remind the decision recently made by the US. The US and several European countries banned the visit of Donetsk separatists to their territories. Why the Donetsk separatists are prohibited to visit the country, while doors are opened to the separatists of Nagorno-Karabakh?

This issue goes beyond the double standards. Either the US is not interested in the settlement of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict through peaceful means, or this visit pursues some secret interests.

Or the US took this step just to please the Armenian lobby operating in the country. If these actions of the US pursue secret interests, then by and large, it aims to put pressure on Azerbaijan. The criticism of Azerbaijan by some US officials in recent days gives ground to say that.

However, regardless the reasons, such actions of the US do not correspond to this country's status. It is a very mistaken policy on the one hand to say that the Azerbaijan is the strategic partner of the US, and on the other hand to stab in the back.
