Campaigns to discredit Azerbaijan held on eve of major events

Baku, Azerbaijan, Mar. 13

By Elchin Mehdiyev - Trend:

Unfortunately, on the eve of large scale events in Azerbaijan, there are always those who hold campaigns to discredit the country, first deputy speaker of Azerbaijani Milli Majlis (parliament) Ziyafat Asgarov told Trend on March13.

He was commenting on the anti-Azerbaijani campaigns held by some international organizations on the eve of the First European Games.

Asgarov added that such campaigns would not reach their goals.

The first deputy speaker reminded that this campaign was held on the eve of the Eurovision international song contest in Baku as well, however, it flopped.

These campaigns are held by forces that have a negative attitude to Azerbaijan, Asgarov added.

There are certain international organizations and persons who intend to discredit Azerbaijan's development, its increasing influence in the world, according to the first deputy speaker.

He said that Azerbaijan is a dynamically developing country both from economic and political point of view and naturally some international organizations and persons are against this development.

Therefore, anti-Azerbaijani campaigns are held on the eve of such events, but justice will prevail and Azerbaijan will continue to develop, according to Asgarov.

Baku 2015 is the first ever European Games, an exciting and innovative multi-sport event for the continent which will take place from 12 - 28 June 2015.

There will be a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports. More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe will be representing their nations over 17 days of competition.

Baku was awarded the Games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
