First European Games in Azerbaijan - historical sporting event – MP

Baku, Azerbaijan, Apr. 7

By Elchin Mehdiyev - Trend:

Holding First European Games in Azerbaijan is a historical sporting event, MP of Milli Majlis (Parliament) Ilham Mammadov told Trend Apr.7.

He went on to add that the forces that cannot accept this fact continue their dirty activity against Azerbaijan.

He said that these forces regularly disseminate false and biased information about Azerbaijan, thereby seeking to harm the image of the country.

The MP said that Azerbaijan pursues an independent policy and can have its say in any situation.

The anti-Azerbaijani forces are very concerned about it, so in anticipation of European Games they try to discredit the country, he said, adding that however it is clear that such attempts will again be, as always, unsuccessful.

Mammadov went on to add that the holding of the First European Games in the country, first and foremost is a historical event, as most European countries will participate in these games.

A large number of athletes and fans will come to Azerbaijan, which is of great importance in terms of promoting the country, said the MP, adding that the games will also bring the country a great deal of political and economic dividends.

Mammadov said that the credibility of Azerbaijan on the international arena will increase, and the country, having held the European Games, will demonstrate that it is a reliable country for investment and thus attract the attention of global investors.

Baku 2015 is the first-ever European Games, an exciting and innovative multi-sport event for the continent which will take place on June 12-28, 2015.

There will be a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports. More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe will be representing their nations over 17 days of competition.

Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
