If private commerce between Azerbaijan and the US flourishes, the potential for stronger and peaceful relations between the two countries will improve, says Steve Hanke, the applied economics professor at the Johns Hopkins University.

"The US has superiority in free-market soft power: competitive markets, know how, technology, etc.," Hanke told Trend Oct. 6.

"In short, the US private sector soft power is a positive force," he added. "The negative force is the US government meddling, which it is prone to do."

"So, if the US private sector plays a more active role in the region, it's good. But, if it's the US government, it's bad," Hanke stressed.

He further noted that private commerce is the best medicine to encourage peace and prosperity.
