Baku, Azerbaijan, Dec. 17
By Elena Kosolapova – Trend:
Azerbaijan is a country that is strategically important for the region, commander of the US Transportation Command, Air Force General Darren McDew told reporters in Baku Dec. 17.
He noted that it is his first visit to Azerbaijan and he thanked the Azerbaijani people for hospitality. General McDew also noted that he is thankful for meeting Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev, who is a great leader.
President Ilham Aliyev is building road networks and rail networks in Azerbaijan, and this contributes to the country’s economy as well as to economies of the entire region, General McDew said.
He noted that Azerbaijan – a country with 25 years of independence – makes a strong and independent partner for the US.
The high-ranking US official also said that he discussed with President Aliyev as well as the defense minister the long-term interstate cooperation, and more importantly, what this cooperation would look like decades later.
General McDew also offered his condolences regarding the recent accident in the Caspian Sea, with missing oilmen.
