BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 18. Azerbaijan has applied to become an observer country in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Iran's national coordinator in the SCO Secretariat Mehrdad Kiaei told Russian media, Trend reports.
“Several countries have applied to join, including Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Armenia, Bangladesh, Azerbaijan and others. These countries (except Bangladesh) seek to change their status from a dialog partner to an observer. We, in principle, are ready to consider this issue and in coordination with the relevant applicants and member states of the organization come to some kind of conclusion,” Mehrdad Kiaei said.
According to the national coordinator, at first, they should become observers and only then they can be full-fledged participants.
Later, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan confirmed this information.
Azerbaijan joined the SCO as a partner in 2016.
