BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 2. Azerbaijan's experience could serve as a model for addressing the challenges surrounding missing persons, Director for Policy and Cooperation at the International Committee on Missing Persons (ICMP) Andreas Kleiser said at the international conference " Addressing the Issue of Missing Persons: Upholding Families’ Right to Know the Truth," Trend reports.

Kleiser drove home the point that nations need to join forces and pull together to get to the bottom of the issue of missing individuals.

The problem of prisoners and missing people, he said, is a major concern for all countries.

"And finally, let’s move to a more practical aspect that also deserves attention. Virtually everywhere, we lack centralized systems for processing data on missing persons, as previously highlighted by another speaker. Often, missing individuals are beyond the jurisdiction of the state conducting the investigation, and we are increasingly globalizing the problem of missing persons. The reasons for individuals going missing are becoming more varied. Therefore, establishing and implementing centralized data processing systems that fully protect personal data and prevent misuse is crucial," Kleiser added.

Baku is hosting an international conference on “Addressing the Issue of Missing Persons: Upholding Families’ Right to Know the Truth.”.

The event started with an address by President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev to the participants of the conference, which was read out by Ali Naghiyev, Head of the State Security Service of Azerbaijan, Chairman of the State Commission for Prisoners of War, Hostages, and Missing Citizens.

Head of the Central Search Agency of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Florence Anselmo, Deputy Foreign Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan Fariz Rzayev, Deputy Minister of Family and Social Services of the Republic of Türkiye Zafer Tarikdaroglu and other officials are also taking part in the event.

The event is taking place today in Baku and will continue tomorrow in the liberated territories of Azerbaijan.
