BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 31. The 8th meeting of the Organizing Committee was held in preparation for the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change on October 31, Trend reports.
Samir Nuriyev, head of the Presidential Administration and chairman of the organizing committee, emphasized that only a few days remain until COP29.
He noted that since the last meeting, preparations for COP29 have accelerated under the directives of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and are now in the final stages. Nuriyev also mentioned that President Ilham Aliyev reviewed the extensive preparatory work carried out at the Baku Olympic Stadium on October 17 and provided relevant instructions.
The chair of the organizing committee noted that over 100 heads of state and government, as well as vice presidents, are expected to participate in the COP29 leaders' summit.
Nuriyev added that more than 50,000 people have registered to participate in COP29 through the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Secretariat, and this number is expected to grow as the registration process continues.
The chair of the organizing committee emphasized that during his address to participants at the Pre-COP29 event held in Baku on October 10-11, the head of state highlighted the importance of reaching an agreement on a new climate financing goal at COP29 and expressed confidence that achieving the Baku Agreement would be remembered as a collective achievement of the international community.
The head of the Presidential Administration stressed the importance of implementing the transportation plan developed for organizing transport in Baku during COP29.
Besides, Nuriyev briefed on the final preparations at the Baku Olympic Stadium, the events organized by state structures in collaboration with international partners, and other related matters.
The committee chair said that foreign media and NGOs are also showing great interest in participating in COP29.
The Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, COP29 President Designate Mikhtar Babayev spoke about the ongoing processes leading up to COP29, including the annual session of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Group and the ongoing conference of the parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity currently taking place in Colombia.
The Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan, Head of the Foreign Policy Department of the Presidential Administration Hikmat Hajiyev delivered speech on media communications activities and the contribution of civil society to COP29.
Anar Alakbarov, another Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan, spoke about the work being done at the Baku Olympic Stadium, transport monitoring in the capital, and other organizational and logistical issues.
Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov spoke about important documents planned for adoption during COP29, particularly concerning the latest situation regarding the new climate financing goal.
Minister of Energy Parviz Shahbazov briefed on the initiatives being undertaken in Azerbaijan in the field of green energy and the measures planned during COP29 by the Ministry of Energy.
Azerbaijani MP, UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP29 Nigar Arpadarai informed the meeting attendees about the Baku Climate Week and other related events.
Head of the State Migration Service Vusal Huseynov spoke about managing migration issues during the organization of COP29.
Head of the State Special Communications and Information Security Service Ilgar Musayev mentioned the ongoing work to ensure information security during COP29.
Youth Climate Champion for COP29 Leyla Hasanova shared work on involving youth in climate activities.
The meeting showcased a video on the preparatory work at the Baku Olympic Stadium.
Concluding the event, Nuriyev expressed confidence that Azerbaijan, under the leadership of President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, will achieve another historical success at COP29 and issued directives to continue implementing the COP29 action plan and address other important matters.
In under two weeks, Azerbaijan will host COP29, the decision about which was made at the COP28 plenary meeting held in Dubai on December 11 last year.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. COP—the Conference of the Parties—is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change. There are 198 countries that are parties to the Convention. Unless the parties agree otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Germany's Berlin with its secretariat in Bonn.
