YURI MERZLYAKOV: PRESIDENTS OF AZERBAIJAN AND ARMENIA CAN MAKE STATEMENTS IN KAZAN

Presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia, Ilham Aliyev and Robert Kocharayan can make statements in Kazan after the next round of talks, the Russian OSCE Minsk Group co-chairman Yuri Merzlyakov told Trend in his exclusive interview.

According to him, the meeting of the heads of the states will rather take place on 27 August, as the CIS summit in Kazan on 26 August will be rich in events and В"there will be hardly time“ for the bilateral meeting. Merzlyakov underlined, discussion of the draft of any agreements on the Karabakh settlement is not planned at the meeting of the heads of states.

В"The issue is premature”, he added. As for any joint statement, it may be made depending on the sides’ arrangements. В"Everything here depends on them, the way they would like to present the results. If they find the results are not worth of it, there will be likely no statement”, the diplomat noted.

The text of the statement by itself is, according to Merzlyakov, “rather a quick working process”, which may be formulated on the results of the meeting for some tens of minutes.

Responding the question on the work done from the moment of the Minsk Group co-chairs’ visit to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict region, a diplomat said: after the talks with the Presidents we had to think over the information, we received, those wishes, standpoints and process it. It has been done.

We sent letters to Presidents from co-chairs with the proposal to meet in Kazan and with our vision of the way it could be discussed. Thus, the co-chairs made this job. It seems to me, to the great degree everything depends on the sides, how much they are ready to make required moves towards each other”.
