President Chirac Regards as Unnecessary and Inappropriate', the Legal Penalty for Denial of the So-Called Armenian Genocide'

President of the French Republic, Jacques Chirac regards as unnecessary and inappropriate' the legal penalty for the denial of the so-called Armenian genocide' committed in 1915, Trend reports. President Chirac made this statement in the telephone talk with the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, ITAR-TASS has been told at the Elysee Palace.

The bill envisaging the legal penalty for the denial of the so-called Armenian genocide' was adopted at the National Assembly of France last Thursday [October 11]

According to the French President, the adoption of the law on recognition of the law recognizing the events of 1915-1917 taken place in Osmanly Empire as the Armenian genocide, is enough to restore the historic truth. The discussion over legal penalty for the genocide' was initiated by the oppositional socialists and is explained as rhetoric' rather legal side of the case'.

At the same time the French President retained his position that the recognition of the genocide' by Turkey should be open of terms for its entrance to the EU.

The adoption of the draft law at the National Assembly deteriorated the relationship between France and Turkey. The EU voiced its disappointment in connection with the resolution taken by the French MPs, naming it counter-productive step'.
