An extract of Trend's interview with the Head of Foreign Relations Department at the Executive Administration of Azerbaijani President, Novruz Mammadov.

- The West intends to eliminate its energy dependence on Russia at the expense of Azerbaijan and Central Asia. From this standpoint the energy summit in Krakow where Azerbaijan, Poland, Georgia, Lithuania and Ukraine signed a joint communique was viewed as anti-Russian.

- The Azerbaijani President took this step in Poland not against any country, but to realize the potential of Azerbaijan. This gossip has been spread by those who seek to undermine relations between Azerbaijan and Russia. There are a many media representatives in Azerbaijan who do not have a real love for their country. It is they who bring up such provocative issues. They make it worse for themselves. The recent articles about oil contracts of 1991-1993 are one of them. The journalists have tried to accuse the authorities. But they should not be so hostile.

Russia also has forces resisting the development of Azerbaijan. Demand in energy in the world is so high that even if the potential of Russia and Azerbaijan were 5 times higher, there would still be a demand. It is not so easy to meet the demand for energy of all countries at once.

The persons who consider this to be a competition or enmity definitely have some goals; the need not to depend on Russia for oil and gas export. In fact, the oil and gas to be exported by Azerbaijan, Russia and Central Asia will not totally meet the demands of Europe. We have a market and commercial interests.
