Azerbaijan Interested in Ensuring Security and Expanding Cooperation in Caspian: Deputy Minister (video)

Azerbaijan, Baku /corr. Trend I.Alizade / Azerbaijan President's Representative for South Caucasus and also Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov said on 22 June at a press conference that Azerbaijan supports tranquility, peace, and development of cooperation regarding the Caspian Sea.

According to Khalafov, the project of the resolution and convention that will be discussed at the summit of the State Heads of the Caspian littoral countries includes items regarding security issues. Khalafov said that security issues are one of the fundamental and important issues for the Caspian littoral countries. "Firstly it is so, because ensuring security in the Caspian is important for ensuring security in the whole region. Secondly, it is an important factor from the point of view of successful and continuous works. We therefore attach special significance to this issue. And we support complex solutions of these issues," he said.

In addition, the Deputy Minister stressed that various projects have been devised to ensure security in the Caspian. According to him, the negotiations will focus on which of the projects will be given preference.

"We try to devise maximum common interests on this issue in the project of the convention, because in practice, the agreement which is planned to be signed in the future ensures regional security in the Caspian Sea," the Deputy Minister said.

Ensuring security is one of the important issues in maintaining cooperation and improving an investment atmosphere, Khalafov said. "We consider that balanced approaches should be taken into consideration. The Caspian littoral countries have been provided with equal security measures," Khalafov added.
