Azerbaijani Opposition Parties United Within New Consultative Council Reach Agreement

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr. Trend S.Ilhamgizi / Sardar Jalaloglu, the chairman of the Democratic Party of Azerbaijan (DPA) has stated that six Azerbaijani political parties united within the newly established Consultative Council achieved an agreement on a range of issues.

DPA, the Social Democratic Party of Azerbaijan (SDPA), the Azerbaijani National Independence Party (ANIP), the Musavat Party, the Tereggi Party and Eldar Namazov, the politician, are represented in the Consultative Council.

Jalaloglu said that the meeting held on 27 June decided to hold a meeting at the beginning of July to discuss social and economic problems.

The Consultative Council is a union of parties with different political positions and is an optimal mean of coordination.

In spite of differences in positions, the political parties reached an agreement on some essential issues including exchange of information, co-ordination of positions, and joint approach to future solution of national problems.

"It was decided to take joint steps with respect to the forthcoming elections. The proposal on joint position of political parties during the forthcoming Presidential elections is likely to be considered," Jalaloglu said.

According to Jalaloglu, the Consultative Council will not have its Charter.

DPA was founded by Sardar Jalaloglu in 1991. The party took a radical opposition position against authorities by January, 2007. In January the party changed its political position and preferred a dialogue with the Government.
