Chairman of Azerbaijan’s Former Democratic Party Surrenders to Balakan Region Police
Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. E.Guliyev / Nizami Guliyev, the former Chairman of the regional organization of the Azerbaijani Democratic Party, has given himself up to the police in the Balakan region of Azerbaijan.
According to Logman Ismaylov, the Deputy Chief of the Balakan Police Station, Nizami Guliyev shot at a police research assistant on 30 June. Guliyev then fled to the mountains were he hid. Later Guliyev voluntarily gave himself up. Ismaylov noted that the incident occurred after talks with Guliyev's family. Guliyev's gun is still missing.
A criminal case has been filed in the Balakan regional prosecutor's office in contravention of Article 29.120.1 (murderous assault) and Article 134 (murderous threat) of the Azerbaijani Criminal Code. The investigation continues.
The Chairman of Democratic Party of Azerbaijan (DPA), Sardar Jalaloglu, has stated that prior to the incident, Guliyev had put in his resignation as Chairman.
