US, Russian and Azerbaijani experts intend to meet in Baku on 15 September to discuss the issue concerning the possible joint use of the Gabala Radar Station.
The President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, offered the joint use of Gabala Radar Station of Azerbaijan during a meeting with the US President George W Bush during the G8 summit on 7 July.
Experts from the US, Russia and Azerbaijan will meet in Baku on 15 September and will visit the Gabala region. "We informed them that the Gabala Radar Station is Azerbaijani property and they should hold negotiations with Azerbaijan first," the Azerbaijani Foreign Minister said.
Russia is leasing the Gabala Radar Station from Azerbaijan. The Gabala RS was constructed during the Soviet period. After gaining the independence the station became Azerbaijani ownership, but Russia still continued to use the station. The agreement envisaged a ten year lease of the station which was signed in 2002.
