( CNN ) -- Luca Toni and Hamit Altintop scored second-half goals in Portugal as tournament favorites Bayern Munich beat Belenenses 3-0 on aggregate to reach the UEFA Cup group stage.

However, Premier League Blackburn Rovers, Serie A sides Sampdoria and Empoli, Spanish side Real Zaragoza and Dutch giants Ajax were among the clubs who failed to progress.

Bundesliga leaders Bayern were reliant on a goal from Italian international Toni to win the first leg in Germany and the same player made the score 2-0 on aggregate on the hour mark.

The former Fiorentina striker collected a cross from the left on the edge of the box and beat goalkeeper Costinha with a thunderous shot.

With Belenenses now needing three goals to advance, Bayern sensed the tie was theirs and they wrapped it up in the 78th minute as Toni laid on a simple chance which Alttintop converted.

Blackburn went out despite beating Greek side Larissa 2-1 on the night. However, their 2-0 first leg defeat meant they exited 3-2 on aggregate.

Empoli crashed to a 3-0 defeat in Zurich to lose 4-2 on aggregate to the Swiss club while Sampdoria went out on the away goals rule after drawing 0-0 at Danish side Aalborg.

Zaragoza beat Greek side Aris Salonkia 2-1 on the night but lost 2-2 on the away goals rule but perhaps the biggest surprise of the night was the demise of former European champions Ajax -- who lost 3-2 at home to Croatian side Dynamo Zagreb to go out on the away goals rule.

Premier League clubs Tottenham drew 1-1 at Anorthosis of Cyprus for a 7-2 aggregate win, while fellow-English sides Everton and Bolton also narrowly progressed.

Spanish giants Villarreal and Atletico Madrid both cruised through, while Hamburg, Bordeaux, Galatasaray and AZ Alkmaar also progressed.
