( dpa ) - Computer chip maker Advanced Micro Devices posted its fifth consecutive quarterly loss Thursday, largely due to a writedown on its purchase of ATI Technologies, a graphics chip maker.
AMD, which is battling larger rival Intel, posted a net loss of 1.77 billion dollars, after incurring a charge of 1.61 billion dollars on the ATI deal. Without the writedown AMD would have posted a loss of 97 million dollars on revenue of 1.77 billion dollars.
For the year AMD reported revenue of 6.013 billion dollars, and a net loss of 3.38 billion dollars. The company bought ATI in 2006 for 5.6 billion dollars.
AMD's report comes just two days after Intel reported record fourth-quarter earnings of 2.27 billion dollars on record revenue of 10.71 billion dollars.
