( dpa ) - The World Health Organization and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg will release this week the first analysis on tobacco use and ways to control it in order to reduce the annual 5.4 million deaths worldwide, it was announced Monday.

WHO Director General Margaret Chan and Bloomberg will release the report in New York on Thursday. Bloomberg helped fund the report. WHO said unless measures are taken to curb tobacco use, the death toll could increase from smoking to 8 million people a year by 2030.
