18 year old HIV Carrier –Azerbaijani Sentenced to Nine Months of Imprisonment

Azerbaijan, Baku, 6 February / Trend corr. К.Zarbaliyeva / Elnara Ahmadova- 18, HIV carrier, accused of infecting 200 people with the disease, was sentenced to nine months of the imprisonment.

According to the information by the Nasimi District Court, Ahmadova will serve the sentence in the general regime prison.

A criminal case was filed in Nasimi District Police Department in contravention of Article 140.1 (deliberate threatening one's life with HIV contamination). Ahmadova was sentenced to nine months of the imprisonment.

On 18 August 2003, Elnara Ahmadova, 17, was delivered to Dermatovenerologic Dispensary of Baku's Ramana settlement. Blood analysis held in the Republican Centre for HIV Combating, revealed the virus in the girl's blood. She was registered at the Centre.

The International UNICEF organization has expressed its dissatisfaction because of the sentence given to Ahmadova. The statement made by UNICEF expressed concern for the state of the girl, who became the victim of human trafficking.
