Azerbaijan, Baku, 11 March / Trend corr S. Ilhamgizi/ On 11March, the Press Council of Azerbaijan applied to the Appeal Court regarding the four-year sentence of Ganimat Zahid, the editor-in-chief of the newspaper Azadlig, the Chair of the Press Council Aflatun Amashov told Trend on 11 March.

"The four-year prison term for the editor-in-chief of Azadlig alarms the Press Council," the appeal says.

Zahid was arrested in November 2007 on hooliganism charges. On 7 March 2008, the Yasamal Court in Baku sentenced him to four years imprisonment. Zahid did not plead guilty and is going to appeal.

The Press Court's appeal says that Zahid is a famous person, the editor-in-chief of a regular newspaper and the father of four children.

The Press Council urged the mitigation of the prison sentence.
