Turkish goalkeeper Volkan Demirel has been banned for two matches, Europe's governing body UEFA said on Wednesday.

Volkan was sent off in the last minute of Turkey's 3-2 victory against the Czech Republic and will now miss his country's quarter- final clash against Croatia on Friday and a semi-final game if Turkey beat the Croats, reported dpa.

The Turkish football association was also fined 44,000 Swiss francs (42,000 dollars). UEFA said they had been fined because Volkan sat on the bench after being red-carded, because they had 25 people in the changing rooms and because Turkish fans had attempted to rush onto the field.

Volkan has 24 hours to appeal the decision.

The organization said that a decision on German coach Joachim Loew and Austrian coach Josef Hickersberger, who were sent off in their countries last matches, would be taken later Wednesday.

UEFA said they could give no information about referees who would no longer officiate at the tournament.
