European Court Makes Two More Judgments on Azerbaijan (updated)

Azerbaijan, Baku, 10 July /corr. Trend K.Zarbaliyeva / On 10 July the European Court on Human Rights made two more judgments with regards to Azerbaijan.

Violation of rights of Vagif Hajibeyli and Leyla Rahmanova were approved. Their rights were protected according to article 6 (fair court investigation) of Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, a source at the European Court reported to Trend .

Hajibeyli was arrested after an incident between police and participants of demonstration in April 2000 in Fizuli Square.

He was accused of putting resistance to police and after arrest, his activities had been limited by April 2005.

Appealing the court, Hajibeyli demanded considering illegal the decision on his arrest and filing a criminal case. Over this period, his appeals were not considered and complaints were rejected.

According to the decision of the European Court, the Government of Azerbaijan should pay €1500 to Hajibeyli and €2000 to Rahmanova.

Hajibeyli said that he did not demanded compensation from the European Court. He requires the Prosecutor General's Office to apologize for violations with regards to him.

Up to now, the European Court made 13 judgments with regards to Azerbaijan.
